I’m always looking for a good excuse to have a wine party. And if I can throw in a twist to make it fun or even goofy… I’ll do it in a heartbeat.
That’s how my “Girls Rock” wine party idea was born. My friends were having a jewelry-wine accessory party and I tossed the idea at them and they loved it.
I loved the wine accessories, especially the beautiful wine bottle stoppers. They are made by a company called, Ciao Bella. The ladies at Ciao Bella were kind enough to let me use their bottle stoppers in my photos. More on the bottle stoppers later.

The Girls Rock idea is simple. Serve wine with a girl or female themed label or name. I went a step further and asked guests who wanted to participate to rate each wine.

Tell your guests they don’t have to be professional wine critics to participate and they certainly don’t have to know the “wine lingo.” All they have to do is rate the wine and expand on why they did or didn’t like it.
I choose six fun wines to compare, three red, three white. None of the wines were the same varietal. Here’s my list:
-Bitch, 2007 Grenache, South Australia -Mia’s Playground, 2005 Merlot, Carneros -Mad Housewife, 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, California -Four Sisters, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, South Eastern Australia -Kung Fu Girl, 2007 Riesling, Washington State -Courtney’s Angels, 2007 Chardonnay, Santa Barbara

Its pretty interesting the varied opinions you get from a bunch of different people tasting the same wines.

Among the reds, the Mad Housewife Cab was the hands down favorite with the women at the party. Here are some of the comments: -“Very easy in the islands to drink.” -“Nice. Smooth finish. Good Depth.” -“Light, fruit, smooth finish. Could go well with most food dishes.” I purchased Mad Housewife Cabernet Sauvignon at Cost Plus World Market for $9. For more information, visit their website: www.madhousewifecellars.com

Bitch Grenache was a close second. I say it get points just for the name. Here are some of the comments: -“Raspberry, fruity and dry.” -“Nice” -“Fruity, dry finish.” I purchased a Bitch (I just like say that) for way too much at a store I shall not name. You can buy Bitch at www.wine.com for about $12.
Mia’s Playground Merlot came in third among the women at the party, but the men at the party ranked it number one. And yes, there were men at the party. Here are some of the comments: -“Smooth. Lots of fruity flavor.” -“Not” -“Might like it with some food.” A little harsh. But the guys liked it, they just didn’t leave any comments. I purchased Mia’s Playground at BevMo for $6. You can visit their website at: http://www.donandsons.com/threeloosescrews/miasplayground/

Among the white wines, Kung Fu Girl Riesling knocked out the competition. Here are some of the comments: -Light, crisp, sweet.” -Smooth with the after taste fruity.” -I like the hint of sweet and crispness.” I also purchased Kung Fu Girl for too much money at a wine store I shall not name. Kung Fu Girl retails for about $12. Visit their website at: www.charlessmithwines.com.

The buttery chard fans really liked Courtney’s Angels Chardonnay. This wine came in second place among the whites. Here are some of the comments: -“Not like most oaky chards. Nice, dry, fruity. Good wine for a hot day!” -“Dry & buttery. Grapefruit.” -“Buttery, creamy, soft with a hint of vanilla.” Courtney’s Angels is made by Martin Ray Winery www.martinray.com. But the website doesn’t mention the Courtney’s Angel label. In fact I can’t find much info about this wine at all. I purchased the wine at Total Wine & More for about $10.

The Four Sisters Sauvignon Blanc came in dead last. But I’m not sure the bottle of wine was good. It tasted very watery and the comments reflected that. -“Too fruity and watery.” -“Would not buy.” -“Didn’t like. Too sharp and not smooth as expected.” Ouch. Again, I’m not sure the bottle was good. I’ll have to try another bottle at some point to make sure. I purchased Four Sisters at BevMo for $11. The website is: www.foursisters.com.au.
